18-19 Student of the Year
2019 Student of the Year

Each year the Maine Administrators of Career and Technical Education (MACTE) hosts an event to honor the Student of the Year. It is an opportunity for each Career and Technical Education (CTE) site and center across the state to recognize their respective student of the year.

Our 2019 MACTE student of the year is Ty Jordan from Deering in our culinary program.

Ty entered the Culinary program with a clear idea of what he wanted to accomplish and what he wanted to get out of the program. He already had a job at a local restaurant when he entered the program and has been able to build on his skills to move up  at his job.
He has been a tireless volunteer, always present at out of school events we have been fortunate to be a part of. He is comfortable approaching other chefs at these events, introducing himself using the event to network, building relationships, working the system.
Ty took advantage of the dual enrollment option at SMCC and has passed the  food manager Servsafe national certification, which also earns him college credit.

He helps his fellow classmates by setting an example of engagement and working until the job is finished. He assists visitors and peers when they are stymied by a project or fumbling with basic techniques. He has come up with creative solutions to situations in our cafe while it is being rebuilt and always has a can do attitude.
Participating in the ProStart and SkillsUSA competitions has helped him develop more confidence and problem solving skills.
